Reds Vault Over Cubs With Back to Back Wins

After a rough stretch, the Reds have now won their last two and they’ve won three of their last four. Today’s game was particurlarly impressive because the Reds not only put eight runs on the board, but they also got a very solid start by Micah Owings. He gave up just one run on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts in six innings and the win pushed his record to 5-8.

There were plenty of hitting stars in this one. Brandon Phillips went three for five with three RBIS and three runs. Ramon Hernandez had three hits and three RBIs while Johnny Gomes belted a two run homer, his fourth of the season. In all, the Reds picked up fifteen hits and the only regular to not pick up a hit was Paul Janish.

The division is getting more and more interesting and the Reds are sitting right in the middle. They’re in third place and they’re 2 1/2 back of the first place Brewers and Cardinals. Of course they also sit just 2 1/2 games ahead of the last place Pirates in a division that has six teams seperated by a mere five games. Can you say, “anything could happen.”

The Reds get a day off then Arizona comes to town. Bronson Arroyo gets the nod in the series opener and the Diamondbacks will throw Dan Haren. The Diamondbacks have really struggled and their in the midst of a five game losing streak. And outside of the Nationals, they’re at the bottom of the National League.

Reds Follow Rest of Division With Another Loss

The Reds haven’t been winning much, but they’ve still managed to hang on to their 3 1/2 game deficit because nobody in the Central is playing particularly well.  Last night, the Reds opened up their series with the Indians by getting squashed 9-2 and it was ace Aaron Harang who got pummelled.  He gave up seven runs (five earned) on ten hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Johnny Gomes had a pair of hits and he drove in a run in the loss.  Brandon Phillips doubled and he scored once.

Homer Bailey gets the nod again in his fifteenth chance at sticking.  He’s pitched pretty well down in Louisville, so hopefully he’ll finally be able to put something together for the Reds.  Tomo Okha gets the nod for the Indians.

Reds Drop Third Straight, Fall Back Below .500

Interleague play is sitting well with the Reds.  They lost their opener against the Blue Jays last night so that pushes their losing streak to three games.   What’s just is bad is everyone but the Cardinals are stinking it up in the Central so had we gotten a nice little winning streak together, the Reds could be in at least second place.  But no, they even scored some runs (five) but it wasn’t good enough.  Now they have the Astros on knocking on their door trying to knock the Reds from their fourth place perch.

Micah Owings got off to a slow start and never really recovered in this one.  There was no big inning by the Jays but they scored in four of the six innings that Owings threw.  In all, he gave up six runs on nine hits and two walks with a strikeout in 5 2/3 innings.  Maybe he lost becausehe wasn’t allowed to hit.

Joey Votto made his return and he went one for four with a pair of strikeouts.  Chris Dickerson went two for three with an RBI.

Tonight, it’ll be Bronson Arroyo going up against Scott Richmond.  Don’t let that 8-5 record fool you, because Arroyo has struggled althoug his last start was a nice one.

No Offense = Another Loss

It’s a funny world.  The Reds scored eight runs yesterday but lost.  Today, they got a solid but not great start from Aaron Harang yet lost 4-1.  The Reds got just six hits and two of those were by Johnny Gomes.  The lone run came in the eighth inning when Brandon Phillips drove home Chris Dickerson with a sac. fly.

Aaron Harang fell to 5- 7 on the season despite still having a 3.66 season ERA.  He gave up three runs on eight hits without a walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings.  Nick Masset is now close to seeing his ERA go over the two mark after he gave up a run.  Daniel Ray Herrera got the final two outs and he has a nice, even 2.22 ERA.

Fortunately, the Tigers took care of the Brewers here in Detroit.  The Reds are back to .500, and they’re in fourth place, but they’re still just four games back of the now first place St. Louis Cardinals.  Watch out for the Cubs though, although they’re taking on a hot Tigers team.

Reds Continue Roll Against White Sox

The Reds took care of the Braves two game to three earlier this week and now they’re keeping things going with a series opening win over the White Sox.  Bronson Arroyo gave up two early runs but he pitched nicely after that and it allowed the Reds to get back into the lead.  Brandon Phillips brought the big stick and he homered and drove in three runs.  Jerry Hairston went two for three with a run and a double.

Arroyo improved to 8-5 on the season.  He gave up two runs on two hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.  Francisco Cordero struck out two in a shutout ninth and he picked up save number 17.

Because the Cubs came back and won, the Reds still sit in fourth place.  I’m not sure if the Brewers will finish their game with Detroit so that at least means we’ll pick up a half game.  Tomorrow it’ll be Johnny Cueto against Clayton Richard.

Reds Pour On the Offense, Slip Into Third Place

Normally, seven runs wouldn’t be big of a deal but this is your 2009 Reds.  Yeah, they scored four of those in the eighth to lock up the win, but a win is a win and it once again pushed the Reds record into the winning variety and it slipped them a half game ahead of the Cubs for sole possession of third place.  Oh yeah, it also snapped that ugly four game four game losing streak the Reds had.

Laynce Nix led the way with three hits and three RBIs.  Of those three hits, two were doubles.  Brandon Phillips also had a nice game and he went three for four with a walk, two doubles and two runs.

Aaron Harang’s start got cut short because of the rain but he threw two shutout innings.  Daniel Ray Herrera threw three shutout innings and he improved to 1-2.  He’s yet another reliever who’s done his job and while his WHIP is a mediocre 1.35, his ERA is just 1.69.  Speaking of ERA, Nick Masset finally gave up a run and his ERA is now north of one.

Micah Owings gets the start tonight.  The Braves will throw Javier Vazquez.  Don’t let the 4-5 record by Vazquez fool you because this guy has been throwing well.  105 strikeouts versus 16 walks is just sick but this guy has been doing it for years.

No Offense, No Win

You think I’d be used to this by now.  We are two months into the season and it’s not like the hitters have been lighting things on fire.  Stll, five hits against isn’t going to cut it and that’s what happened last night.  Heck, Albert Pujols drove in as many runs by himself then the entire Reds lineup.

Brandon Phillips doubled and scored a run in the loss.  Laynce Nix singled, drew a walk and drove in one.  Bronson Arroyo was touched up for five runs in 5 1/3 innings and while the pen did a nice job (namely Jared Burton, who threw two shutout innings), it wasn’t enough.

So we’re even at 1-1.  Tonight it’ll be Johnny Cueto going up against Kyle Lohse.  Cueto’s been good so hopefully he can keep it up.

Win The Battle, Lose the War

Reds are dropping like flies.  First Joey Votto hit the disabled list and now it looks like Edinson Volquez’s problems continue.  He was pulled after just one frames and it was a rough one to boot.  Fortunately the pen did their job and the hitters came through (thank you Laynce Nix) to give the Reds the win.  Mike Lincoln gave up a run but it was over three innings and he improved to 1-0.  Nick Masset threw another shutout frame and then Arthur Rhodes and Francisco Cordero each threw a shutout inning each to close out the game.

Laynce Nix had the big hit.   His two run double gave the Reds the lead in the fourth inning and they never looked back.  Ryan Hanigan went two for four and he scored two runs.

The Brewers lost too so now the Reds sit just one loss back of the Cards and two back of the Brewers.  There’s still a lot of games left in this series and tonight it’ll be Bronson Arroyo against Brad Thompson.

Sweep

For the third straight game, the Brewers were too much for the Reds and this time, Cincinnati picked up just a couple of runs on seven hits. Brandon Phillips belted a solo homer (his ninth) and Alex Gonzalez went two for four. Another mediocre offensive performance overall.

Micah Owings wasn’t all that great either. He gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings and while the pen did a decent enough job, the Reds couldn’t never get the bats going to sneak away with just the one win in the series. Nick Masset has been really good this year and he did it again with 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief.

Now it’s go time against the Cardinals. Game one is tomorrow and we’ll see Edinson Volquez against Todd Wellemeyer.

Reds Hope to Avoid Sweep to Brewers

We’re about a half hour away from the Reds finale against the Brewers and the goal is to avoid the sweep. The Reds had made some nice headway in the division but after losing two to the Brewers, they now sit 2 1/2 games back (just two in the loss column) against Milwaukee and and the Cardinals. Just as important, the Reds kick off a huge four game set against the Cards beginning tomorrow. It’s not do or die time, but this week could go a long way towards helping out the Reds cause as they’re playing the best of their division.

Last night was pretty ugly as Aaron Harang was bounded around. He gave up eight runs on twelve hits and he didn’t even last five frames. Harang has been a bit of a Jeckyl and Hyde because in his losses, he looks pretty bad (at least five runs given up in four of five losses). Then in his wins, he’s really good (three runs or less in five wins and one no decision). Still three of his last four starts haven’t been up to snuff so hopefully he’ll snap out of it soon.

Chris Dickerson had a nice game leading off and he went three for four with a run and an RBI. Jerry Hairston pitched in with a two run homer and Brandon Phillips went yard with a solo shot.

Micah Owings throws here in less then 20 minutes. The Brewers will throw Yovani Gallardo.
