The Reds took the series against the Cleveland Indians in a 3 games to 0 sweep in interleague play. The 3 victories bring the Reds record to 21-23.
Game 1 was as close as a game could be as the final score was 4-3. The Reds took an early lead getting 2 runs in the 1st and 1 more in the 2nd making the score 3-0. Cleveland answered in the 6th when they collected 3 runs of their own tying the score at 3. The Reds did take the game though when they scored the final run in the 8th making the score 4-3, which ended up being the final. Brandon Phillips had the best game for the Reds as he went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. The hit he recorded was a 2 run homer in the 1st inning. Adam Dunn also had a nice game going 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. His hit was also a homer that he hit in the 2nd but Dunn’s shot was a solo-homer. The 2 homers give both Dunn and Phillips 8 homers on the season. Johnny Cueto was given the start for the Reds and seemed to get back on the winning track. He pitched 6 inning giving up just 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and 7 K’s. Unfortunately he wasn’t given the win because the game was tied when he left the game. David Weathers did get the win thought as he pitched 1 inning giving up just 1 hit. His record is now 1-2 this season. Francisco Cordero came in to close out the game and did just that getting his 8th save of the season.
Game 2 was also a close one with the Reds getting the win with a 4-2 score. The win is the reds 5th in a row. The Indians took an early lead getting 1 run in the 2nd inning making the score 1-0. The Reds answered in the 6th getting 1 run of their own. Cleveland shot back adding another run to the score making it 2-1. In the bottom of the 9th the Reds rallied for 3 runs and the victory making the score 4-2. Adam Dunn once again came through for the Reds going 1-for-4 with 3 RBI and 1 run scored. The 1 hit was a 3 run shot in the bottom of the 9th that sealed the win for the Reds. The homer is his 9th of the season and it brings his RBI total to 25. Brandon Phillips also had a good game hitting 2-of-4 with 1 RBI. The RBI brings his total to 22 this season. Aaron Harang took the mound for the Reds and pitched a great game going 7 inning deep allowing 8 hits, 1 runs, 1 walk and 5 strike outs. He didn’t receive the win but Bill Bray did going 1 inning giving up no hits as he struck out 2. The win brings his record to 1-0 this season and it also makes his ERA 4.26.
Game 3 was yet another close game that the Reds were lucky to get out of with a victory. The 6-4 final score is the Reds 6th win in a row. Adam Dunn once again stepped up going 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and a run scored. 1 of his hits was a solo-homer in the 4th inning giving Dunn 10 for the season. Brandon Phillips had another good game also going 1-for-4 with 2 RBI. The 2 RBI are his 23rd and 24th of the season. Pinch Hitting 1st basemen Joey Votto hit a 2 run homer in the 6th inning going 1-for-1 with 2 RBI and a run scored. The homer is his 9th of the season. Edinson Volquez pitched another good game getting his 7th win of the season bringing his record to 7-1. He took the mound and worked 6 inning allowing just 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks and 5 Ks. Francisco Cordero came in to close out the game and did just that getting his 9th save of the season striking out 2 in the process.
Overall it was a very good weekend for the Reds and an even better last 6 games. If they keep up this kind of play they will find themselves with a .500 record and maybe in the race for the NL Central.
The series finale scheduled against the Florida Marlins for Thursday was canceled due to persistent rain. The game hasn’t yet been rescheduled but as of right now the Reds will move on to play the Cleveland Indians.
Its too bad too because it seemed like the Reds would pull off a 4 game sweep over the Marlins giving them some momentum towards getting to a .500 record. Look for the starters that were ready to play on Thursday to be pushed for the game on Friday.
Cincinnati took the 3rd game of the scheduled 4 against the Florida Marlins on Wednesday 7-6. The win is the 3rd in a row against the Marlins and win on Thursday will complete the 4 game sweep. The Reds now have their record at 18-23 and despite the 3 game win streak they still find themselves in last place of the NL Central.
It seemed the Reds had this game in hand when they entered the 9th inning but the Marlins weren’t ready to give away a win. When the top of the 9th came Florida got 6 runs to tie the game and forced the game into extra innings. The Reds finally did win the game in the 10th inning but not before the Marlins put up a major fight. Ken Griffey Jr. had a good game for the club going 1-for-4 with 1 RBI and a run scored. He now has his batting average at a weak .250 and his RBI total is at 19. Adam Dunn also had a good game going 1-for-3 with 1 RBI and a run scored. The hit was a solo-homer in the 6th inning giving him 7 for the season. The best game seemed to come from Jerry Hairston who hit 3-of-4, including a double and a triple, with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. His bating average is at a staggering .357 and his RBI total is now at 6.
Bronson Arroyo took the mound for the Reds and pitched a great game, but because of the 9th inning heroics by the Marlins, he didn’t receive the win. He worked 7 innings giving up 5 hits, 0 runs, 3 walks and 5 strike outs. Jared Burton did get the win however because he was the last pitcher to throw before the Reds scored a run in the bottom of the 10th to win the game. The win brings his record to 2-1 this season and his ERA now stands at 4.58.
It would be great to see the Reds come out of a 4 game series with a sweep. Hopefully wins like that will get them back on the winning track and they can make it a race in the NL Central. They will try to finish off the Marlins on Thursday night, attempting to complete the sweep.
At least he didn’t go winless in April. Bronson Arroyo improved to 1-3 on the season with a nice start as the Reds took care of the Cardinals 4-3. He gave up three runs on six hits and three walks and he struck out six in six innings. Kudos to the pen. Francisco Cordero was one of three relievers to throw shutout frames and he picked up his fourth save of the season.
Edwin Encarnacion doubled twice and drove in two while the Dunnster went two for four with a walk, a run and an RBI. That puts Adam back over the Mendoza line. E squared is off to a nice start if you count his hitting. He also made his eighth error of the season.
Johnny Cueto gets the nod tonight. Joel Pineiro throws for the Cardinals.
For the second straight night, the Reds put a pair of numbers in the run column instead of just with a 10-1 pasting in their final against the Reds. It’s nice to win a series because it’s been a while and it was also nice to see Edinson Volquez improve to 4-0. In the meantime, Barry Zito fell to an ugly 0-6. What happened to that guy.
Adam Dunn sat this one out but Brandon Phillips picked up the power bat with a pair of long balls. He drove in three and scored three while Ryan Freel went two for five with two runs and two RBIs.
Volquez struck out ten in seven solid frames. He gave up just one run on five hits and three walks. His ERA of 1.23 looks very nice as well.
Next up are the second place Cardinals in St. Louis. Bronson Arroyo gets the nod against Todd Wellemeyer in the opener tomorrow night.
It was a love hate relationship. You brought us Brandon Phillips and Bronson Arroyo and I definitely love you for that. On the other hand, there was The Trade. Yeah, that one. Does the name Gary Majewski and Bill Bray ring a bell? What about Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez? Anyway, Walk Jocketty is your new GM and like the Reds current manager, he comes with his pedigree. The timing is questionable, but it is what it is. If Jocketty signs Adam Dunn to a nice fat extension, then I’ll be happy. If he lets him go, then he’s definitely under suspicion.
The Reds lost so the Walt era is off to a poor start. Johnny Cueto throws tomorrow in an afternoon game. I like our chances because I don’t recognize the name of the pitcher the Astros will be throwing out there.
You have to like series opening wins and the Reds put the wood to the Dodgers tonight in a 8-1 win. Adam Dunn and Brandon Phillips both homered while Jerry Hairston, Jr. is made the most of his call up with a four for five, three RBI game at the leadoff spot. He got the start in center so it’s yet another guy blocking Jay Bruce. Still, it’s hard to complain today because he got the job done.
Edinson Volquez improved to 3-0 with a very nice start. He gave up one run on three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Jeremy Affeldt and Todd Coffey both threw shutout frames to hold the Dodgers scoreless the rest of the way.
A split isn’t all bad considering the way the Reds have been losing. Next up are the Astros, which are one of the bottom feeders in the Central with the Reds.
Matt Belisle’s season got off to a rough start as he was shelled in his season debut. He gave up seven runs (five earned) on twelve hits and a walk in just four innings of work. Hopefully this is a blip in what is a decent season in the rotation for Belisle’s. If he matches last year’s .301 batting average against, he might not be around for too long.
The offense didn’t do much in the 9-3 loss either. Edwin Encarnacion doubled, homered and scored twice while Joey Votto belted his fourth of the season. The Reds grounded into three double plays and that negated what could have been some run production with their nine hits and four walks in the game.
It’s a two game set and Edinson Volquez gets the start tomorrow. Hopefully he can work some magic and get the Reds going.
The Reds ended their five game losing streak this afternoon and they did it behind the stick of Joey Votto. The first baseman finished the game two for five with a homerun and five RBIs. Ken Griffey, Jr. also got the bat going and he went two for five with a three run homer. Votto’s hitting .351 now, which is a testament to how this guy can rake.
Edinson Volquez improved to 2-0 on the season with a nice start. He gave up just one run on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in five innings in the 9-2 win.
So the skid is over and next up will be the Brewers. Milwaukee sits at 9-6 and it’d be nice if the Reds brought them down to earth this weekend. Bronson Arroyo gets the nod in the opener against Brewers ace Ben Sheets.
After a nice start to the season, the Reds have now lost five games in a row. This one was ugly and it was over pretty quick as Josh Fogg was dismantled nine runs in two innings. By the end of the third inning, you had a 10-1 deficit so from there on, the only reason to watch the game was to see if Adam Dunn would hit a homer or not.
And he did. Dunn belted homerun number two and with a two for three game, he’s now right at the Mendozza line. Joey Votto doubled twice, drove in a run and scored.
The Reds try to avoid a sweep this afternoon. Edinson Volquez will get the ball and the Reds hitters will have to contend with Ted Lilly.
