Cincinnati was on the wrong side of a blowout on Sunday as they lost to the Florida Marlins 9-2. This is the 2nd loss in a row for the Reds and it now makes their road record 11-24, which is near dead last in all of baseball. They now look at a record of 30-34 as they continue to stay in the basement of the NL Central.
The offense once again struggled as they only produced 3 hits against solid Florida pitching. So solid in fact that the Reds struck out a total of 14 times. Corey Patterson came in for 1 at-bat and produced a big one as it was a solo-homer in the 8th inning. The jack is his 5th this season and he has his batting average at a weak .197. The only other RBI came off the bat of pitcher Aaron Harang who went 1-for-2 getting his 1 RBI of the season. Not much else positive to speak of offensively besides the fact that Jerry Hairston Jr. hit his 13th double of the season.
Aaron Harang took the mound for the Reds and really didn’t pitch that well. He worked 5 and 1/3rd innings allowing 11 hits, 8 runs, 7 earned and 2 homers. He was given a loss once again for his effort bringing his record to an ugly 2-9 with an ERA of 4.31. Once again though the relievers did their job stopping the bleeding as they only allowed 2 more hits and 1 more run for the remainder of the game. The problem for the Reds is that it was much too late as the game was already out of reach.
Another game where the Reds offense doesn’t want to get going. They will need to solve this problem before game 4 which takes place on Monday at 7pm and if the Reds win they will tie the series at 2 games a piece.
Cincinnati lost the final game of the 4 game series against the Philidelphia Phillies on Thursday in a 5-0 shutout. The Philly win gives them the series 3 games to 1. The Reds now look at a record of 29-32 and sit in last place of the NL Central.
Not really much you can talk about offensively when a shutout occurs. I guess the good news would be that Ken Griffey Jr. returned after missing a few games due to ‘general soreness. He went 1-for-4 in the game getting his 12th double of the year. Jerry Hairston Jr. also went 1-for-4 which was a double as well. In fact all 3 hits that the Reds recorded were doubles but no one was able to drive any home. The final double came off the bat of SS Paul Janish who went 1-for-3.
Homer Bailey got the start for Houston and pitched an okay game. He worked 6 and 1/3rd innings allowing 4 hits, 5 runs, 2 earned, 4 walks and 1 K. He was given the loss for the game bringing his record to 0-1 this season with a 2.84 ERA. I must mention the winning pitcher in this one who pitched a complete game shutout. He goes by the name of Cole Hamels and he was absolutely great going all 9 innings allowing just 3 hits, no runs and 4 K’s. He earned the win bringing his record to a solid 6-4 with an ERA of 3.36.
Not a very good game for the Reds, not a very good game at all. The offense should be embarrased that they couldn’t get anything going even when chances presented themselves. They will now open up a 4 game series against the Florida Marlins on Friday.
Cincinnati lost the 2nd game of a scheduled 4 game series on Tuesday to the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2. The loss brings the Reds road record to an ugly 9-21 which is near the bottom in the ML. They now look at a record of 28-31 and are now just .5 games from sitting in last place of the NL Central.
Ken Griffey Jr. once again got the night off due to ‘general soreness’ and will have to get number 600 another time. Edwin Encarnacion had the most impressive game for the Reds as he went 2-for-4 including a triple and a homer with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. The homer is his 10th of the season and his batting average now stands at .239. The only other RBI for the Reds came off the bat of pinch hitting catcher Javier Valentin who hit a sac-fly bringing in his 4th RBI of the year.
Aaron Harang took the mound for the Reds and had a mediocre start. He worked 6 inning allowing 8 hits, 3 runs, all earned, 1 walk and 4 K’s. He was given the loss for the game bringing his record to a poor 2-8 with a 3.86 ERA. The other 2 relievers that came in didn’t give up a hit or a run and struck out 4 in the process.
Not a very good game for the Reds as they only collected 5 hits total. They will now continue to slip to the cellar of the NL Central until they find a way to get things going offensively and on the road.
Cincinnati lost the first game of a scheduled 4 against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday 5-4. The loss ends the 2 game winning streak that the Reds were building. They now have a 28-30 record and continue to sit in the 5th place spot in the NL Central.
For those of you keeping track of the Griffey homer numbers can take the night off because he did due to soreness. Jay Bruce has come on strong for the Reds and went deep once again. He went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. His batting average is at a ridiculous .577 with 3 home runs. Edwin Encarnacion also went yard going 1-for-4 with 1 RBI and a run scored. His homer gives him 9 for the year and his batting average now sits at .234. Adam Dunn pitched in as well hitting a double and going 1-for-4 with 2 RBI. The RBI give him 39 for the year with 7 doubles.
Bronson Arroyo took the mound for the Reds had a shaky outing. He went 4 1/3rd innings allowing 10 hits, 5 runs, all earned, 2 walks and 3 homers. He was given the loss for the game brining his record to 4-5 with a 5.61 ERA. The good news for the Reds is that the 3 relievers that came in didn’t allow another run pitching a combined 3 2/3rd innings giving up just 2 hits.
Its never good to lose a game especially when you are trying to climb your way out of the bottom but when a young stud like Jay Bruce comes along it makes you feel things might be ‘okay’ soon. He looks to be a great talent and there should be no doubt that he is ready to be a big time performer in the show.
The Reds opened up a 3 game series with the Atlanta Braves on Friday in a 3-2 extra inning win. The win gives the Reds a 26-29 record and once again jump into 4th place in the NL Central above the Pirates.
Young Outfielder Jay Bruce once again showed why he is MLB ready as he had the best game for the Reds by far. Bruce went 4-for-5 wth 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. He scored the most important run of the game in the bottom of the 11th when Brandon Phillips hit a frozen rope that went under the glove of Chipper Jones giving Bruce the opportunity to win the game, which he did. Brandon Phillips came up clutch with the hit, which wasn’t recorded as a hit because of the Chipper Jones error, as it was his 30th RBI of the season. Jerry Hairston also put forth a solid effort for the Reds going 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. The steal is his 10th of the year and the hit gives him a batting average of .345.
Edinson Volquez was given the start for Cincinnati and pitched a solid game. He worked 6 innings giving up 5 hits, 2 runs, all earned, 3 walks and 7 strike outs. Unfortunately he didn’t receive the win because the lead he built was given up in the 7th inning when the Braves tied the score at 2. Kent Mercker did get the win though pitching in the 11th inning allowing just 1 hit. The win brings his record to 1-0 this season with a solid ERA of 3.29.
This is a good way to open up a series against a strong team like the Braves. Late inning wins can sometimes build momentum for the games that follow which will be game 2 on Saturday in the afternoon.
Cincinnati lost the final game of the 3 game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday 7-2. The Reds did take the series though as they won the first 2 games of the series as the set ends up at 2 games to 1. They now have a 25-29 record and drop back into last place in the NL Central.
The offense really had their struggles in this one as they only collected 4 hits total. The only good game came from Brandon Phillips who hit his 10th homer of the year. He went 1-for-3 with 1 RBI and a run scored. The RBI gives him 29 for the season and his batting average now stands at .295. Jerry Hairston had a good game as well going 2-for-4 with a run scored. There wasn’t much more production from the bats outside of these 2 players. The only other hit came from Adam Dunn who went 1-for-2.
Aaron Harang took the mound for the Reds and had a terrible evening. He pitched just 4 innings but gave up 10 hits, 6 runs, all earned and 1 homer. He was given the loss for the game bringing his record to 2-7 with a 3.81 ERA. Jeremy Affeldt came in for some relief work going 2 innings giving up just 1 hit but it was for a home run. His stat line looked like 1 hits, 1 run, 1 K and 1 homer.
A bad way to finish off a series that the Reds started so well. The bats went cold in this one after the team put together 2 consecutive 9 run innings. They will now open up a series with the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.
Cincinnati took game 2 against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday in a 9-1 blowout. The win gives the Reds a 2-0 lead in the series with just 1 game to go. Cincinnati now looks at a 25-28 record and jump above the Pirates in the NL Central putting them in 4th place.
The offense came out of the gate swinging putting together 6 runs in the 1st inning taking control of the game from which the Pirates could never recover. Joey Votto had a very good game for the Reds going 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, 3 runs scored and a stolen base. The RBI give him 29 for the year and his stolen base count now sits at 3. Catcher David Ross also had a nice game for the Reds going 2-for-3 with a homer and 4 RBI. The homer is his 1st of the season and the RBI give him 5. Jerry Hairston also had a RBI going 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored. The hitting makes his batting average a strong .338 and his RBI now stand at 9.
Bronson Arroyo took the mound for the Reds and pitched a solid game. He worked 6 innings giving up just 3 hits, 1 run, 4 walks and 6 Ks. He earned the win for his ball club bringing his record to an even 4-4 with a 5.29 ERA.
Another good game for the Reds as they collect 9 runs for 2 consecutive games. They will look to continue the hot hitting streak on Thursday as they close up the series with the Pirates looking to complete the sweep.
Cincinnati took the 1st game of a scheduled 3 game set on Tuesday with a 9-6 victory. The win gives the Reds a 24-28 record but keeps them in the basement of the NL Central now 7 games back from the 1st place Cubs.
The offense had a great game for the Reds as they collected 12 hits. The biggest game came from Adam Dunn who went 2-for-5 with 4 RBI and a run scored. One of the hits was a 3 run homer in the 5th inning giving him 14 for the season. The 4 RBI give him 36 for the season and his batting average now sits at .256. Newly acquired OF Jay Bruce had a good game as well going 3-for-3 with a double 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Not a bad showing for his major league debut. Jerry Hairston also pitched in going 2-for-4 with 1 RBI, a run scored and 2 walks. The RBI is his 8th of the season and his batting average now sits at a strong .320. Ken Griffey Jr. also recorded a RBI along with Brandon Phillips getting their 23rd and 28th of the season.
Johnny Cueto pulled out of his slump when he took the mound for the Reds. He work 5 innings giving up 9 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned and 4 strike outs. He earned the win for his ball club bringing his record to 3-5 this season with a 5.40 ERA. Francisco Cordero came in to close out the game and did just that getting his 11th save of the season.
A good win for the Reds against a team that they should beat. Hopefully they can put together a few more victories and pull out of the cellar of the NL Central. They will play game 2 on Wednesday night.
Cincinnati ended their 4 game skid on Friday with a 3-2 road win against the Padres. The victory brings the Reds record to 22-27 this season but they continue to stay at the bottom of the NL Central.
Both offenses had a hard time getting things going in this one as they only put together a combined 11 hits. The most important hit though, came in the 9th inning off the bat of Adam Dunn. Dunn hit a solo-homer off Padre closer Trevor Hoffman giving the Reds a 3-2 lead, and eventually the win. Dunn went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. He brought his homer total to 12 this season and his RBI now stand at 30. Pinch hitting catcher Javier Valentin came in to hit in the 7th inning for pitcher Edinson Volquez. He went 1-for-1 with 1 RBI. The RBI is his 2nd of the season and his batting average is at an ugly .091.
Edinson Volquez got the start for the Reds and had an excellent outing. He worked 6 inning allowing just 2 hits,1 run, 2 walks and 12 strike outs! He didn’t get the win though because his team was still down when he left the game. His ERA did drop to a very strong 1.34 after his outstanding showing. David Weathers did get the win pitching just 1/3rd inning giving up no hits and striking out 1. The win brings his record to 2-3 this season with a 4.91 ERA. Francisco Cordero came in to close the game out and did just that getting his 10th save of the season striking out 2 in the process.
Nice win for the Reds and the best part is that it stops the bleeding. They will now play game 3 on Saturday at 10pm.
The Reds lost their 4th game in a row on Thursday at the hands of the San Diego Padres with a final score of 8-2. The loss brings their record to 21-27 and keeps them in the cellar of the NL Central. Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 598th homer of his career keeping him just 2 away from the big 600.
The offense was really nonexistent after the 1st inning where they collected 2 runs off the bat of Griffey. The homer gave the Reds an early lead but they wouldn’t hold onto it for very long. In the 5th inning the Padres collected 3 runs getting and never looked back. They added 2 more in the 6th and 3 more in the 7th making the score 8-2 which ended up being the final. As said above Ken Griffey Jr. went deep for the 5th time this season bringing his total for his career to 598. In the game he went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. The hit brings his batting average to .253 this season. Adam Dunn also had a good game going 2-for-4 but he didn’t record a RBI or a run scored. As a team the Reds only recorded 5 hits to the 14 the Padres got. That’s just not going to cut it against any team and as we saw in this game, it wont cut it against a bad team like the Padres.
Aaron Harang took the mound for his ball club and had a shaky outing. He work 5 1/3rd innings allowing 10 hits, 5 runs, 2 walks and 2 homers. He was given the loss for the game bringing his record to 2-6 and his ERA to 3.50. Bill Bray pitched 1 inning giving up 1 hit and 1 run. Mike Lincoln had a rough 2/3rds inning as he gave up 2 hits, 2 runs, all earned and 2 homers. His ERA jumped to 6.86 for the season.
Not a very good game for the Reds but at least Griffey got back on the homer track. The Reds will play the final 3 games of the series against the Padres this weekend.
