Reds Doubled by Giants in Loss on the Road

September 17, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Giants 4, Reds 2  (95-54)

Giants starter Jim Barr held the Reds in check as the Giants topped the Reds.  Tony Perez doubled and drove in a run and the double was the only extra base hit for the Reds.  Joe Morgan and Bill Plummer both had two hits.

Jack Billingham dropped to 11-10 on the season.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks through seven innings of work. 



Cesar Geronimo Drives in Two in Reds Win Over Dodgers

September 16, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Reds 4, Dodgers 2  (95-53)

The Reds inched closer to their second straight 100 win season behind a solid outing by Don Gullett.  He improved to 9-3 with the complete game and gave up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and walk with five strikeouts.

Cesar Geronimo drove in two of the Reds four runs and Dave Concepcion went three for four with two runs.  Gullett even helped out his own cause with two hits and an RBI.



Tony Perez Leads Offense in Win Over Dodgers

September 15, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Reds 4, Dodgers 3  (94-53)

Tony Perez drove in two runs with two doubles and a single as the Reds edged the Dodgers.  Pete Rose had four hits and a run while Ken Griffey went two for five with a run and an RBI.

Pat Zachry improved to 13-5 on the season.  He gave up three runs on ten hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  Rawly Eastwick threw the final 1 1/3 and didn’t yield a single baserunner en route to his 23rd save of the season.



Joe Morgan Steals 500th Career Base in Loss to Dodgers

September 14, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Dodgers 9, Reds 0  (93-53)

The day off didn’t the Reds much good as they were blasted by the Dodgers.  The Reds got 10 hits and a walk, but stranded 12 runners as they were held scoreless.

Gary Nolan dropped to 12-9.  He gave up seven runs on twelve hits in seven innings of work.  Ken Griffey had three hits and he stole his 30th base of the season.  Joe Morgan stole number 55 and it was the 500th of his career.



Reds Split Doubleheader With Giants

September 12, 1976 at Candlestick Park 

Giants 3, Reds 1  (92-52)

The Giants edged the Reds in game one of their Sunday twin billing.  Fred Norman gave up three early runs and it was all the Giants needed as Barr held the Reds’ offense in check.  Norman dropped to 12-5 on the season.

Cesar Geronimo had two hits and the only RBI for the Reds.  Ken Griffey had two singles and Joe Morgan walked and stole his 54th base of the season.  The game lasted only one hour and 50 minutes.

September 12, 1976 at Candlestick Park 

Reds 9, Giants 8  (93-52)

While the first game of the doubleheader went by about as quickly as you could expect, the second game was three hours and forty five minutes of drama.  The Reds jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, only to see it disappear completely by the end of the sixth.  In the seventh, the Giants took a two run lead, but the Reds answered with two in the top of the eighth.  The game went into extra frames and the Reds put the winning run on the board in the eleventh on Dave Concepcion’s sac. fly.

Pete Rose had three hits and three RBIs and Ken Griffey went three for six with one RBI.  Cesar Geronimo had two singles, a triple and two runs and Dan Driessen went yard for the seventh time this season.

Joe Henderson improved to 2-0 on the season with three shutout innings of relief.  Rawly Eastwick earned his 22nd save by holding the Giants scoreless in the bottom of the eleventh.



Reds Come From Behind For Fourth Straight Win

September 11, 1976 at Candlestick Park 

Reds 8, Giants 5  (92-51)

The Reds came back from being down 3-0 and 5-1 to win their 92nd game of the season.  Tony Perez homered and drove in two runs while Dave Concepcion had a double, a single and three RBIs.  Johnny Bench had a single, three walks and two runs and Bill Plummer drove in two with two hits.

Joe Hernderson picked up the win in his first appearance of the season.  Pedro Borbon held the Giants hitless in the final two innings as he earned his seventh save of the season.



Don Gullett Shuts Down Giants In Reds Third Straight Win

September 10, 1976 at Candlestick Park 

Reds 4, Giants 1  (91-51)

The Reds continued their winning ways behind a three hitter by Don Gullett and the pen.  Gullett improved to 8-3 on the season and gave up a single run on seven hits and five walks.  Rawly Eastwick threw a perfect ninth and struck out two to earn his 21st save of the season.

Pete Rose came a homerun short of hitting for the cycle and he drove in two runs.  Pinch hitter Mike Lum singled and drove in two runs.  Bill Plummer went a perfect two for two with a run.



Reds Edge Astros in Eleven Innings

September 9, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Reds 4, Astros 3  (90-51)

The Reds won an exciting eleven game thriller after coming back from a three run deficit.  The Astros tagged Pat Zachry for three runs in the first two innings before he calmed down and yielded to a rock solid bullpen.

In the top of the eighth with the score still 3-0, Johnny Bench singled home Joe Morgan to make it 3-1.  In the top of the ninth, Cesar Geronimo and Dave Concepcion hit back to back singles.  George Foster struck out and then Pete Rose singled to load up the bases.  Ken Forsch reliever Joaquin Andujar, and he got Ken Griffey to fly out to left to make it two outs. Then the MVP, Joe Morgan, singled to drive home Geronimo and Concepcion to tie the game.

Neither team scored in the tenth.  In the top of the eleventh, Pete Rose grounded out to start things out.  Then Ken Griffey reached second on a costly error by Tavares.  Joe Morgan was walked intentionally and then it looked like the Reds had bailed out Alex Taveras because Griffey was caught stealing third on a double steal.  Then Bob Bailey singled home Morgan to give the Reds the first lead of the game.

Will McEnaney set the Astros down in order in the eleventh to earn his seventh save of the season.  Rawly Eastwick won his 11th game of the season with two innings of relief.



Gary Nolan, Rawly Eastwick Shutout Astros

September 8, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Reds 3, Astros 0  (89-51)

Gary Nolan and Rawly Eastwick combined for a four hit shutout over the Astros.  Nolan improved to 12-8 and gave up four hits on seven innings of work.  Rawly Eastwick pitched two perfect frames and earned his 20th save of the season.

Tony Perez and Johnny Bench were both on the same page today.  For the second straight day they both hit homeruns and their season totals (16) were the same as well.



Joe Morgan Hits Grand Slam in Tight Win Over Astros

September 6, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Reds 9, Astros 8  (88-50)

The Reds won their fourth straight despite a late inning surge by the Astros.  The Reds scored eight runs in the third inning and had a 9-3 lead in the sixth only to see the Astros score two in the seventh and three in the eighth to make the game close.  Rawly Eastwick was finally able to get out of the ninth by getting Ed Herrmann to pop up to second base, which stranded Bob Watson at third.

Manny Sarmiento picked up the win for the second straight day.  He improved to 5-1 on the season.  Rookie starter Santo Alacala only lasted 3 1/3 innings and he gave up three runs on five hits and three walks.

Joe Morgan hit a grand slam in that big third inning.  Dave Concepcion had two hits and two RBIs.  George Foster had to be removed from the game after a fly ball bounced off the wall and hit him in the eye.
