Reds Edge Giants, Eastwick Holds on in Ninth

May 19, 1976 at Candlestick Park 

Reds 5, Giants 4  (21-13)

Rawly Eastwick got out of a huge jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to avert a come from behind win for the Giants.  After giving up two runs, Eastwick had a runner at first base with only one out and got both Bobby Murcer and Gary Matthews to fly out to center to end the game.

Santo Alcala picked up the win and improved to 3-0 on the season.  He gave up two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.  Eastwick picked up his fifth save of the season despite the ninth inning troubles.

Johnny Bench drove in two runs and Joe Morgan went two for three with two stolen bases and two runs.  Ken Griffey scored twice.



Reds Shut Out by Dodgers, Fall Back to Second Place in NL East

May 18, 1976 at Dodger Stadium 

Dodgers 6, Reds 0  (20-13)

The Reds finally ran out of gas on the west coast and they managed only three hits against Dodger starter Rick Rhoden.  It also didn’t help that the pitching staff got knocked around.

Jack Billingham dropped to 4-3 and gave up four runs on five hits and four walks in three innings of work.  Pedro Borbon gave up a single run on five hits in two innings.



Ken Griffey Hits Reds to Win Over Dodgers

May 17, 1976 at Dodger Stadium 

Reds 5, Dodgers 3  (20-12)

Even a west coast road trip couldn’t slow down the Reds as they topped the Dodgers despite getting outhit almost two to one.  The Reds scored five runs on six hits, while the Dodgers only scored three runs on eleven hits.

Ken Griffey went two for four with three RBis and triple.  Dave Concepcion went two for four with a run and an RBI.

Pat Zachry imporved to 2-0 on the season.  He gave up three runs (one earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings.  Rawly Eastwick held the Dodgers scoreless in the final two frames and picked up his fourth save of the season.



Reds Split Doubleheader With Mets

May 16, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Mets 7, Reds 1  (18-12)

Gary Nolan was knocked around by the Mets in the first game of a Sunday double header.  Nolan dropped to 3-2 and gave up five runs on nine hits in only four innings of work.  Pedro Borbon was also hit hard and gave up two runs while only getting a single out.

Pete Rose hit his third homerun of the season.  Tony Perez drove in two runs and stole a base and Bob Bailey doubled twice.

May 16, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Reds 8, Mets 1  (19-12)

The Reds bounced back in the second game of their doubleheader with the Mets and put eight runs on the board.  Dave Concepcion went three for four with a double and four RBIs while Cesar Geronimo tripled and drove in three runs.

Don Gullett gave up a single on four hits and three walks in five innings of work.  He improved to 3-2 on the season.  Pat Darcy held the Mets to a single hit in the final four frames as he earned his second save of the season.



Santo Alcala Throws Four Hit Shutout Against Mets

May 15, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Reds 2, Mets 0  (18-11)

The Reds continued their hot streak as they topped the Mets behind rookie Santo Alcala’s four hit shutout.  Alcala improved to 2-0 and struck out nine in an impressive start.

The Reds scored both of their runs in the seasond inning.  Dave Concepcion went two for three with a triple and an RBI while Ken Griffey singled twice.



Jack Billingham Holds Mets To a Single Run in Reds Win

May 14, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Reds 5, Mets 1  (17-11)

The Reds won for the fifth time in six games despite only getting four hits.  The Reds also benefited from the Mets hitting into four doubleplays.

Johnny Bench’s two run shot in the sixth inning was the difference maker.  He also drove in a third run with a sac. fly.  Tony Perez scored twice and Joe Morgan stole his thirteenth base of the season.

Jack Billingham was impressive as he improved to 4-2 on the season.  He gave up a single run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in nine innings of work.



Reds Winning Streak Comes to an End

May 12, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Pirates 6, Reds 3  (16-11)

The Reds four game winning streak came to an end as Don Gullett was hit hard by the Pirates.  He gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings of work and he dropped to 2-2 on the season.

Dave Concepcion and Bill Plummer both hit solo homeruns.  Eight different Reds accounted for the eight different hits as Pirates starter Jim Rooker held the lineup in check.



Gary Nolan Shuts Out Pirates, Reds Win Fourth Straight Game

May 11, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium 

Reds 6, Pirates 0  (16-10)

The Reds won their fourth straight game behind a six hit shutout by Gary Nolan.  Nolan improved to 3-1 in a strong outing.  He didn’t walk a single batter and struck out five.

Tony Perez accounted for most of the Reds offense. He homered and drove in four of the Reds’ six runs.  Dan Driessen drove in the other two runs and had two hits.



Reds Score Fourteen for the Second Straight Time to Finish Cubs Sweep

May 9, 1976 at Wrigley Field 

Reds 14, Cubs 2  (15-10)

The Reds finished their three game sweep over the Cubs by running up the score to the tune of fourteen runs.  They had 21 hits in the game along with five walks and by the end of the third inning, they had put ten runs on the board.

In all, the Reds hit six homeruns.  Tony Perez went yard twice and Ken Griffey hit a grand slam in third inning.  George Foster, Pete Rose, and Dan Driessen all hit homeruns as well.

Pat Zachry cruised to an easy win and he notched his first win of the season.  He gave up two runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in eight innings of work.



Reds Run Up the Score at Wrigley Field

May 8, 1976 at Wrigley Field 

Reds 14, Cubs 4  (14-10)

The Reds finally got the bats going in a blow out win over the Cubs.  The Reds scored 14 times and had sixteen hits and eight walks.

George Foster went three for five and came a homer short of hitting for the cycle.  He drove in three and scored twice.  Tony Perez and Dave Concepcion both had three hits and two RBIs while Ken Griffey went one for four with two walks, two RBIs and three runs.

Santo Alacala made his first start of the season and while he got into trouble in the first inning by giving up three runs, he held the Cubs hitless in the next six inning.  He improved to 1-0 on the season and struck out two Cubs.
