Phillies 6, Reds 5 (39-24)
The Reds finally got a day off yesterday, but the break didn’t do them much good as they were edged by the Phillies. The Reds scored two runs in the first, but then the Phillies rattled off six unanswered runs to take what turned out to be an insurmountable lead. The Reds scored two runs in the seventh and a single run in the ninth all on a pair of homeruns by George Foster, but the rally fell a run short.
Foster had the big game with the two homeruns and three RBIs. His season homerun total was now 14. Ken Griffey had two his and two RBIs while Pete Rose went two for three with a run and two walks.
Jack Billingham took the loss and dropped to an even 5-5. He gave up six runs on eight hits with four walks in 4 2/3 innings of work. Three different relievers, Rich Hinton, Pedro Borbon and Rawly Eastwick, held the Phillies scoreless over 3 1/3 innings, allowing the Reds to get back into the game and make it close.

Cubs 5, Reds 3 (39-23)
A rainy day ended up in a seven inning loss for the Reds. There was a 55 minute delay in the first inning, a 22 minute delay in the sixth, and then the game was finally called with one out in the bottom of the seventh after a 1:35 rain delay.
The Cubs got all the runs they needed in the first inning. Pat Zachry gave up five runs on five hits and walks. Worst of all, he only got a single Cub out. The Reds scored single runs in the first, fifth and sixth, but their comeback was cut short because of the rain.
Joe Morgan hit his twelth homerun and scored twice. George Foster drove in the other Reds run and Cesar Geronimo had two hits and a run.

Reds 6, Cubs 4 (39-22)
The Reds posted stopped a late inning comeback by the Cubs to top them for the second straight time. The Cubs got to Don Gullett early in the first and tagged him for a run, but the Reds answered with three in the bottom half of the inning. The Cubs scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and tied the game up.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Reds busted the game open and broke the tie with three runs. The Cubs got a single run in the ninth, but Rawly Eastwick held back the Cubs to stop any further damage.

A walk off RBI single by Ken Griffey put this game away as the Reds came from behind to top the Cubs. The Reds got on the board in the third on Dave Concepcion’s homerun in the bottom of the third. Gary Nolan gave up two runs in the fifth, but the Reds tied things up when George Foster went deep in the bottom of the seventh.
In the bottom of the ninth, Dave Concepcion singled to lead things off. He moved over to second on Eddie Armbrister’s bunt and then Pete Rose was given a free pass. Then Griffey came through with his clutch single to end the game.

Cardinals 12, Reds 9 (37-22)
The Reds tried to come back from a huge deficit, but the offense of the Cardinals finally won a game for them. The Reds were down 12-1 but scored in three in the seventh and five in the ninth to make it a three run game. Their comeback fell short though and they took the loss.
Rookie starter Santo Alcala was shelled. He dropped to 6-2 on the season and gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks in 2 1/3. Equally ineffective was Pat Darcy. In the same number of innings, he gave up five runs on six hits and two walks.

Cardinals 5, Reds 4 (36-21)
The Cardinals finally figured out the Reds and a late inning comeback fell short as the Reds four game winning streak came to end. Like yesterday’s game, the Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead. And like yesterday, the Reds slowly crept back into things, even coming to within a run of tying the game after scoring two runs in the eighth. Unfortunately the Reds went down quietly in the ninth as the comeback fell just short.
Doug Flynn went three for four with a run scored and Tony Perez and Pete Rose both hit solo shots. Jack Billingham didn’t last through the third inning and he gave up five runs (two earned on six hits and two walks). He dropped to 5-4 on the season.

Reds 8, Cardinals 7 (36-20)
The Reds continued to beat up the Cardinals, although this time it was a touch closer as the Reds needed a big ninth inning come back to win it. Also of note is Joe Morgan was back in the lineup after hurting his hamstring. The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, and while the Reds cut that lead down by scoring two in the fifth, the Cardinals answered with two in the seventh to make it 7-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Eddie Armbrister flew out to second before the hit barrage happened. Pete Rose, Ken Griffey and Joe Morgan singled in succession with Rose scoring on Morgan’s hit. Joe Morgan moved over to second on a passed ball, and then Tony Perez singled home Griffey for the second run of the inning. George Foster followed that up with a sac. fly and the Reds finished the inning still down 7-5.
In the eighth, the Reds threatened by getting the first two runners on, but a strikout and a double play later and the Cardinals pen had gotten them out of a jam. They weren’t as lucky in the bottom of the ninth. Ken Griffey led off the inning with a walk and Joe Morgan followed that up with a walk. Then Tony Perez came through with a huge three run walk off homer to end the game.
Rawly Eastwick improved to 4-3 on the season as he pitched a shutout ninth. Starter Pat Zachry had his roughest outing to date as he went only two innings and gave up the five runs.
