August 20, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium
Reds 4, Cubs 3 (79-44)
The Reds held off a late inning comeback by the Cubs to win their third straight game. Gary Nolan improved to 11-8 on the season and gave up three runs on eight hits and walk in 6 2/3 innings of work. Rawly Eastwick held the Cubs scoreless in the final 2 1/3 innings to notch his 17th save of the season.
Johnny Bench and George Foster both hit solo homeruns. It was Bench’s 13th of the season and Foster’s 28th.
August 19, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium
Reds 3, Braves 2 (78-44)
Pat Zachry gave up two runs in the top of the first inning but the Braves didn’t score the rest of the game as the Reds edged the Braves in eleven innings. Pete Rose singled home Cesar Geronimo in the second and then Rose tripled and scored on an error in the seventh inning.
Neither team scored in the tenth, but the Reds ended it in the eleventh when Mike Lum singled home Tony Perez. Will McEnaney and Pedro Borbon threw two shutout innings each to close out the game. Borbon picked up the win and he improved to 3-2.
August 18, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium
Reds 4, Braves 1 (77-44)
The Reds snapped their four game skid behind a strong outing by Jack Billingham. Billingham continued a great August by holding the Braves to one run on five hits and two walks. His record improved to 11-8.
Pete Rose had two hits, a stolen base and two runs. Joe Morgan stoled two bases to bring his league leading total up to 40 and Johnny Bench was two for two with a run and an RBI.
August 17, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium
Braves 3, Reds 2 (76-44)
The Reds dropped their fourth straight game and all four losses were by a single run. Santo Alcala was cruising along until he got tagged for runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Rookie reliever Manny Sarmiento gave up the go ahead and took his first loss in his short career.
For the third straight game, the Reds managed only three hits. They did draw nine walks but they stranded eleven runners. Joe Morgan and George Foster drove in the two Reds’ runs.
August 16, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium
Braves 4, Reds 3 (76-43)
The Reds dropped their third straight game as they finally returned home to Cincinnati for a series. Fred Norman dropped to 11-3 on the season. He gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits and five walks. He struck out a then season high 10 batters.
For the second straight game, the Reds managed only five hits. Ken Griffey and Joe Morgan drove in runs and George Foster had two hits.
August 15, 1976 at Shea Stadium
Mets 1, Reds 0 (76-42)
Mets’ starter Jerry Koosman held the Reds to only five hits in their second straight loss. George Foster and Doug Flynn had two singles and Eddie Armbrister doubled. The Reds didn’t draw a single walk and struck out 11 times.
Gary Nolan dropped to 10-8 despite holding the Mets to only one run on eight hits and no walks. He struck out seven and gave up three of his eight hits in the fifth inning, when the Mets scored their only run.
August 14, 1976 at Shea Stadium
Mets 2, Reds 1 (76-41)
Pat Zachry had a solid start go to waste as the Mets dropped the Reds. The Reds scored their only run when Dave Concepcion drove home Cesar Geronimo with a sac. fly.
Zachry gave up two runs on only four hits in five innings of work. He dropped to a still impressive 11-4 on the season.
August 13, 1976 at Wrigley Field
Reds 7, Mets 3 (76-40)
The Reds continued their red hot August with another road win, this time over the Mets. Dave Concepcion and George Foster accounted for all seven RBIs. Foster homered for the 27th time, had two other hits and drove in four runs. Concepcion had two homers, three RBIs, two runs and was a perfect four for four.
Jack Billingham improved to 10-8 on the season. He gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Rawly Eastwick got the final two batters out to earn his 16th save of the season.
August 12, 1976 at Wrigley Field
Reds 8, Cubs 3 (75-40)
The Reds won their three game series over the Cubs with four homeruns. George Foster led the way with two homeruns and four RBIs. His season total is now at 26. Joe Morgan hit his 21st and scored two runs and Johnny Bench went yard with his twelth of the season.
Manny Sarmiento improved to a perfect 2-0 over his career with a shutout inning of relief. Santo Alcala started the game and did get a decision. he gave up three runs on five hits in six innings of work. Rawly Eastwick went two innings and earned his fifteenth save of the season.
August 11, 1976 at Wrigley Field
Reds 13, Cubs 10 (74-40)
The Reds had one of the greatest comebacks in franchise history as they topped the Cubs on the toad. Fred Norman and Pedro Borbon were shelled through the first three innings and gave up ten runs. By the end of the second inning, the Reds were down 9-0. By the end of the third inning, they were down 10-1.
Rookie reliever Manny Sarmiento finally calmed things down and pitched a shutout fifth. The Reds scored two runs in the sixth to shave the lead to 10-3 and then Rawly Eastwick held the Cubs scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, Joe Morgan led off with a walk and moved to third on George Foster’s single. Then Johnny Bench cleared the bases with a three run shot to make it 10-6. Tony Perez kept things going with a single and then he scored on Cesar Geronimo’s double to make it 10-7.
Will McEnaney held the Cubs scoreless in the bottom of the seventh. Then in the top of the eighth, Ken Griffey led things off with a strikeout. Joe Morgan walked and moved to third on George Foster’s single. Then Johnny Bench drove home Morgan to make it 10-8.
McEnaney again held the Cubs scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, and then Dave Concepcion led off the ninth with a single. He stole second base but Bob Bailey struck out. Pete Rose moved Concepcion over to third and then Ken Griffey hit a huge two run shot to tie the game at ten a piece to complete the come back.
Pat Zachry relieved McEnaney in the ninth and held the Cubs scoreless and the game went into extra frames. Johnny Bench reached first base on an error by Mick Kelleher, and Eddie Armbrister ran for him. Tony Perez then singled and Armbrister scored on an error by Pete LaCock. Cesar Geronimo struck out, and then Knowles balked and Perez moved to third. Then Dave Concepcion singled home Perez and Doug Flynn tripled home Perez to make it 13-10.
Zachry got the Cubs to go down in order in the bottom of the tenth to finish the game up. He improved to 11-3 on the season.
