The baseball season never sleeps. If it’s not free agent signing season, it’s awards season. If it’s not winter ball season, it’s arbitration season. Anyway, the Reds have two guys to take care of in the next couple of weeks because Edwin Encarnacion and David Weathers both filed for arbitration.
Edwin had his breakout year last year and he expects to be paid. If the Reds were less short sighted, they’d lock Edwin up to a multi-year deal despite the poor fielding to date (he can only get better, right). He showed some strides both with the stick (25 homeruns) and taking walks (61, a career high). In addition, he avoided injury, which is good. His batting average was a touch down and that’s probably what will excuse the Reds from locking up a guy who’s a potential All Star.
David Weathers has been pitching forever and odds are, he gets his one year deal. This is an instance where I wouldn’t if the Reds actually went to the table. Still, you can’t argue that Weathers has been solid, and he was very good last year setting up Francisco Cordero. So we’ll just have to wait and see what happens this weekend.
We’re getting closer to the “Big Game” and I would like to see what the odds to win the super bowl were for the Cardinals at the beginning of the year. Still, they’re going to be the underdogs and now I’m just waiting to see what the Super Bowl Point Spread will be.
