Cincinnati took the 1st game of a scheduled 3 game set on Tuesday with a 9-6 victory. The win gives the Reds a 24-28 record but keeps them in the basement of the NL Central now 7 games back from the 1st place Cubs.
The offense had a great game for the Reds as they collected 12 hits. The biggest game came from Adam Dunn who went 2-for-5 with 4 RBI and a run scored. One of the hits was a 3 run homer in the 5th inning giving him 14 for the season. The 4 RBI give him 36 for the season and his batting average now sits at .256. Newly acquired OF Jay Bruce had a good game as well going 3-for-3 with a double 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Not a bad showing for his major league debut. Jerry Hairston also pitched in going 2-for-4 with 1 RBI, a run scored and 2 walks. The RBI is his 8th of the season and his batting average now sits at a strong .320. Ken Griffey Jr. also recorded a RBI along with Brandon Phillips getting their 23rd and 28th of the season.
Johnny Cueto pulled out of his slump when he took the mound for the Reds. He work 5 innings giving up 9 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned and 4 strike outs. He earned the win for his ball club bringing his record to 3-5 this season with a 5.40 ERA. Francisco Cordero came in to close out the game and did just that getting his 11th save of the season.
A good win for the Reds against a team that they should beat. Hopefully they can put together a few more victories and pull out of the cellar of the NL Central. They will play game 2 on Wednesday night.
