You have to like series opening wins and the Reds put the wood to the Dodgers tonight in a 8-1 win. Adam Dunn and Brandon Phillips both homered while Jerry Hairston, Jr. is made the most of his call up with a four for five, three RBI game at the leadoff spot. He got the start in center so it’s yet another guy blocking Jay Bruce. Still, it’s hard to complain today because he got the job done.
Edinson Volquez improved to 3-0 with a very nice start. He gave up one run on three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Jeremy Affeldt and Todd Coffey both threw shutout frames to hold the Dodgers scoreless the rest of the way.
A split isn’t all bad considering the way the Reds have been losing. Next up are the Astros, which are one of the bottom feeders in the Central with the Reds.
