Affeldt In the Fold

The Reds made it official and they signed Jeremy Affeldt to a one year, $3 million deal and he has a chance to make a million more if he hits some benchmarks.  Affeldt is a former starter who turned reliever and now the Reds are hoping he can find a spot in the rotation.  Affeldt hopes so as well and the reason it looks like he choose the Reds was because they were one of the few teams to give him a spot in the rotation.

Here’s the problem.  Affeldt is much better as a reliever then he is a starter.  His career ERA as a reliever is 4.21 while as a starter, it’s 5.41.  I also question whether Affeldt is up for a full season in the rotation because the most innings he’s ever thrown in a season is just 126.  He’s going to have to keep those walks down for sure.
