It sure feels like the Reds are getting out of contention in this season awfully early in May. At nine games out, behind the Pirates for God’s sake, I hope things aren’t completely lost. I can’t deny that this team has been tough to watch lately. These 1-run losses are in some ways worse than butt whoopings. At this point, if you have nothing good to say it’s best to say nothing at all, so let’s move on.
With that in mind, let’s talk a bit about Junior Griffey. He’s on a home run tear of late (five in his last 11 games) and is one away from tying Rafael Palmiero for ninth place on the all time list. He’s only five homers away from tying Harmon Killebrew for eighth place. By the end of the year, Griff could be alone in sixth place, passing McGuire and Frank Robinson. That’s pretty impressive company. Fifth place is held by Sammy Sosa who is hitting a few of his own; I doubt he can catch Sammy this year. Big jump after that to Willie Mays at 660. Depending on his health, Griffey may not ever reach that milestone. It’s still fun to see that lazy swing of Junior produce such power. All that with a 33 ounce bat (I hit his signature bat at the Louisville Slugger Museum this past year and was suprised at how short and light it was.) Go Griffey - it would appear on the surface that you didn’t dope your way to the top 10 of the home run list unlike four of the people currently ahead of you on the list (who rhyme with Sombrero, Inquire, Mimosa and Blondes). Like I needed to obscure those names for some reason…
