And here’s part two…
sweaver: Question #2 coming up
Blade: Shoot
sweaver: Who is your choice to start the season as the #5 starter (assuming Harang, Arroyo, Milton and Lohse take 1-4)
Blade: I’m full of opinions tonight
daedalus: Why do we have to have milton in the lineup at all? from what narron is hinting at, milton will be the number 5.
320Pub_Clint: as good as Livingston has been, I would go with Belisle as #5 if we have to keep Milton
sweaver: Because he gets $8 mil this year
Tim Mo: it’s hard to bet against belisle, but i’ll put him in the bullpen so i can have bobby
daedalus: i’d like lohse as 3, belisle as 4, and give livingston a chance at the 5th spot, with saarloos available
Blade: I like Livingston, he’s shown it this spring
sweaver: We’ll get to the Milton question in a bit
Blade: Honestly though, number five is going to be a revolving door
320Pub_Clint: oh ok, because I have plenty to say about that bum
sweaver: I would take Belisle.
Blade: So who’s number five in April doesn’t mean he’ll be number five in May
daedalus: who cares about milton’s contract. the money is already spent. so pay livingston the league minimum and it’s not that much different
sweaver: Belisle has the track record, albeit in relief.
Tim Mo: blade is right, #5 only matters right now
Tim Mo: there will be many #5’s this year, and belisle will hopefully move up
Blade: Same with the final position player, it’s all posturing and usually comes down to who has options left
320Pub_Clint: yeah i agree with that
sweaver: Saarloos starts in the bullpen, Livingston in AAA
Tim Mo: can’t belisle be moved to the pen, or is that simply not feasible?
sweaver: Sure, he can, but someone has to start
daedalus: they want belisle to start for his back
320Pub_Clint: yeah it does look like it will be saarloos in the pen with livingston in aaa
Chris @ RLN: I’d go with Belisle in a VERY SLIGHT edge over Santos. Actually, I’d take them #4-5, but the milton question is later.
Tim Mo: i know milton is later, but people are saying he could be the #5
daedalus: belisle had a killer year last year. and yeah santos has been a surprise
Chris @ RLN: Santos has the best career peripherals of any of those guys.
Tim Mo: yeah, another santos fan!
daedalus: i mean, when belisle actually played
Chris @ RLN: I’m been pimping him all winter. He was the best candidate BEFORE what he did this spring.
daedalus: you know, the fact that we even debate this is awesome. i mean, there’s something called depth there which we have not had in a loooooooong time
Chris @ RLN: I’m not hung up on what number you throw on a guy - “Milton’s the #5″ means nothing. He’s in the rotation, and that’s enough.
sweaver: Santos has a career ERA+ of 85
sweaver: And he’s 22-42 lifetime
Tim Mo: thanks for the reality check, shawn
Chris @ RLN: I’m not hung up on what number you throw on a guy - “Milton’s the #5″ means nothing. He’s in the rotation, and that’s enough.
sweaver: To me, Santos has to prove himself before he gets to start.
Blade: The problem is, we have a lot of #5 guys but no real three’s
Chris @ RLN: Santos gives up quite a few hits (and played in front of crappy defenses), but he strikes out more, walks fewer, and allows fewer HR than Belisle or Milty.
320Pub_Clint: after those stats shawn threw out, i have to agree with him
daedalus: there is a 3 - he’s just starting the year in louisville
Tim Mo: the thing i like about santos is all of his groundball outs
Blade: good point daedalus
Chris @ RLN: You were convinced by the career W-L numbers of a guy who’s pitched for the Brewers and the Pirates in his career?
sweaver: The guy’s also 30. Santos has a lot to prove
320Pub_Clint: no, the era
daedalus: santos’ groundball outs are another reason i wish he’d been given a serious look. has the guy given up a run all spring?
sweaver: Sure, Pirates and Brewers, but 22-42 is 22-42
sweaver: Bullpen
320Pub_Clint: i would take him over milton though
