Paul Wilson – the X Factor?

By Thaq Diesel

I completely forgot about Paul Wilson.  He was out of sight out of mind for me for some reason and when I saw his name popping up in the box score this spring, with a 3 inning zero run outing no less, I was genuinely giddy.  There’s enough competition in this pitching staff to bring out the best in people.  I’m honestly starting to wonder if the pitching staff is perhaps a  major strength for the team.  It’s a no-brainer if a solid third starter comes in to the fray.  My bet is on Wilson filling that role this year.  Coffey looks to be a horse in middle relief, a candidate to get the Scott Sullivan ‘pitch him till his arm falls off’ award this year.  Dustin Hermanson can be the closer the Reds need if his broken back, yes — broken back, has healed correctly.

  • I think Aaron Harang should bet Dunn a steak dinner to see who gets more strikeouts this year.  Then again, Harang probably would have to pay.  And I’m guessing that Dunn eats a LOT of steak.
  •  Josh Hamilton is having a sick spring, hitting over .500.  What a pickup this guy would be if he makes the major league roster and plays, even in a pitch-hitting role, for the Reds.
  • The Big Red Spring Machine is on a roar now.  The Reds are 10-2 in the spring.  I guess that’s good.  We’ll see in a few weeks.
