While watching the BCS games this bowl season I’ve been treated to Thom Brennaman’s play-by-play. Thom will be in the booth with Marty this year. He gets to do 45 games on FSN and 45 games on radio. I heard him on the ESPN AM Chicago radio station on the way home from work tonight (it’s ironic - the local station in Columbus I can’t hear at all after dark but I can get the signal from NYC and Chicago.). Thom sounds a LOT like his dad, both in tone and inflection. The cantankerousness is there too.
The tentative plan from what I can tell is that Thom will take over for Marty around 2010, the year Brennaman the elder wants to retire. I’m hopeful that Thom will be as enjoyable to listen to as the Marty, the baseball voice of my youth. I can’t help but wonder what they’ll talk about in the idle moments of the late innings during blowouts in mid-July. Embarassing childhood moments for Thom, perhaps? What happens if they disagree about something? The possibilities are endless. I hope it’s as enjoyable as it looks on paper. It could be one of the few highlights of next sea - wait, there I go again with a negative outlook.
In closing, I did see a blurb that Krivsky is looking to spend some of the money the Reds saved by letting Aurilia go back to the Bay Area on pitching. There must be a trade brewing because the free agents are taken up.
