Reds Split Doubleheader With Giants

September 12, 1976 at Candlestick Park

Giants 3, Reds 1  (92-52)

The Giants edged the Reds in game one of their Sunday twin billing.  Fred Norman gave up three early runs and it was all the Giants needed as Barr held the Reds’ offense in check.  Norman dropped to 12-5 on the season.

Cesar Geronimo had two hits and the only RBI for the Reds.  Ken Griffey had two singles and Joe Morgan walked and stole his 54th base of the season.  The game lasted only one hour and 50 minutes.

Reds 9, Giants 8  (93-52)

While the first game of the doubleheader went by about as quickly as you could expect, the second game was three hours and forty five minutes of drama.  The Reds jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, only to see it disappear completely by the end of the sixth.  In the seventh, the Giants took a two run lead, but the Reds answered with two in the top of the eighth.  The game went into extra frames and the Reds put the winning run on the board in the eleventh on Dave Concepcion’s sac. fly.

Pete Rose had three hits and three RBIs and Ken Griffey went three for six with one RBI.  Cesar Geronimo had two singles, a triple and two runs and Dan Driessen went yard for the seventh time this season.

Joe Henderson improved to 2-0 on the season with three shutout innings of relief.  Rawly Eastwick earned his 22nd save by holding the Giants scoreless in the bottom of the eleventh.
