Joe Morgan Hits Grand Slam in Tight Win Over Astros

September 6, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium

Reds 9, Astros 8  (88-50)

The Reds won their fourth straight despite a late inning surge by the Astros.  The Reds scored eight runs in the third inning and had a 9-3 lead in the sixth only to see the Astros score two in the seventh and three in the eighth to make the game close.  Rawly Eastwick was finally able to get out of the ninth by getting Ed Herrmann to pop up to second base, which stranded Bob Watson at third.

Manny Sarmiento picked up the win for the second straight day.  He improved to 5-1 on the season.  Rookie starter Santo Alacala only lasted 3 1/3 innings and he gave up three runs on five hits and three walks.

Joe Morgan hit a grand slam in that big third inning.  Dave Concepcion had two hits and two RBIs.  George Foster had to be removed from the game after a fly ball bounced off the wall and hit him in the eye.
