George Foster Homers in Reds Fifth Straight Win

August 1, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium

Reds 5, Padres 4  (67-38)

The Reds won their fifth straight by holding back a late inning surge by the Padres.  San Diego took an early lead when they scored two in the first on rookie Santo Alcala, but the Reds answered with two in the second.  Alcala calmed down and the Reds took the lead in the fourth on George Foster’s solo homerun, then added two in the sixth on Doug Flynn’s two run double.  Alcala then got into trouble in the ninth and gave up two runs, but Rawly Eastwick came it to get the final two batters to end the rally.

Alcala improved to 10-3 on the season.  He went 8 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Eastwick earned his thirteenth save of the season.

George Foster and Johnny Bench both scored two runs.  The homerun by George Foster in the fourth inning was his 23rd of the season.
