Reds Snap Three Game Skid With Tenth Inning Thriller

July 16, 1976 at Riverfront Stadium
Reds 4, Expos 3 (54-24)

The Reds turned things around and snapped their three game losing streak in an extra innings thriller. The game started out as a pitchers dual as neither team scored in the first four innings, but the Expos tagged Fred Norman for two runs in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Dave Concepcion led off with a walk and then stole both second and third base. Mike Lum struck out, but Pete Rose then drove home Concepcion with a double to make it 2-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, Joe Morgan hit a solo homer with one out to tie the game up. Neither team scored in the ninth and the game went into extra frames.

The Expos didn’t waste any time in extra innings as they took a one run lead. Will McEnaney was tagged for the unearned run and the Reds headed into the bottom of the tenth down by a single run.

Joe Morgan led off the tenth with a walk and moved to second on George Foster’s ground out. Bill Plummer then drove Morgan home with a single that tied the game and then moved to second when the outfielder tried to gun down Morgan at home. Tony Perez was given a free pass and then Cesar Geronimo singled to load the bases. Then Dave Concepcion singled to drive home Plummer to end the game.

Rawly Eastwick was credited with the win despite getting only a single batter out. He improved to 7-3 on the season.
