Phillies 6, Reds 5 (39-24)
The Reds finally got a day off yesterday, but the break didn’t do them much good as they were edged by the Phillies. The Reds scored two runs in the first, but then the Phillies rattled off six unanswered runs to take what turned out to be an insurmountable lead. The Reds scored two runs in the seventh and a single run in the ninth all on a pair of homeruns by George Foster, but the rally fell a run short.
Foster had the big game with the two homeruns and three RBIs. His season homerun total was now 14. Ken Griffey had two his and two RBIs while Pete Rose went two for three with a run and two walks.
Jack Billingham took the loss and dropped to an even 5-5. He gave up six runs on eight hits with four walks in 4 2/3 innings of work. Three different relievers, Rich Hinton, Pedro Borbon and Rawly Eastwick, held the Phillies scoreless over 3 1/3 innings, allowing the Reds to get back into the game and make it close.
