Reds 6, Cubs 4 (39-22)
The Reds posted stopped a late inning comeback by the Cubs to top them for the second straight time. The Cubs got to Don Gullett early in the first and tagged him for a run, but the Reds answered with three in the bottom half of the inning. The Cubs scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and tied the game up.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Reds busted the game open and broke the tie with three runs. The Cubs got a single run in the ninth, but Rawly Eastwick held back the Cubs to stop any further damage.
Gullett improved to 6-2 on the season. He gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout. Eastwick finished things out in the ninth and despite giving up the run, he earned his seventh save of the season.
George Foster had three hits and an RBI. Johnny Bench went two for three with two RBIs and Cesar Geronimo singled twice, stole a base, and scored a run.
