Reds 8, Cardinals 7 (36-20)
The Reds continued to beat up the Cardinals, although this time it was a touch closer as the Reds needed a big ninth inning come back to win it. Also of note is Joe Morgan was back in the lineup after hurting his hamstring. The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, and while the Reds cut that lead down by scoring two in the fifth, the Cardinals answered with two in the seventh to make it 7-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Eddie Armbrister flew out to second before the hit barrage happened. Pete Rose, Ken Griffey and Joe Morgan singled in succession with Rose scoring on Morgan’s hit. Joe Morgan moved over to second on a passed ball, and then Tony Perez singled home Griffey for the second run of the inning. George Foster followed that up with a sac. fly and the Reds finished the inning still down 7-5.
In the eighth, the Reds threatened by getting the first two runners on, but a strikout and a double play later and the Cardinals pen had gotten them out of a jam. They weren’t as lucky in the bottom of the ninth. Ken Griffey led off the inning with a walk and Joe Morgan followed that up with a walk. Then Tony Perez came through with a huge three run walk off homer to end the game.
Rawly Eastwick improved to 4-3 on the season as he pitched a shutout ninth. Starter Pat Zachry had his roughest outing to date as he went only two innings and gave up the five runs.
