Miscellaneous Thoughts on the Past Four Reds Games

By Thaq Diesel

  • It’s a shame Griffey is on the DL, but I’m hopeful a little bit of time off now will spare yet another a lengthy outage due to injury.  I have a feeling the Reds Legs will need his bat as the season wears on.
  • One nice side effect is that Ryan Freel has gotten some regular duty.  It amazes me how he doesn’t get to play every day.
  • Brandon Phillips tantalized desperate fantasy baseball owners Thursday with a monster day at the plate.  Casual observers may miss the fact that the Reds have a slew of platoon second basemen (which is even less crowded than usual with Freel in the outfield.)
  • One reason the Reds have a winning record despite their pitching thus far is that they lead MLB in home runs with 32 (Adam Dunn leading that charge with a scorching start at the plate.) and are first in the majors in runs scored (107).  They are also first in runs allowed (102).
  • On that note, the Reds yet again gave up a boatload of runs yet again in the win Thursday against the Brewers.  They’ve given up almost seven per game this year and an average of nine runs per game in the past six nights.
  • Not to beat a dead horse, but the Reds are 28th out of 30 in MLB in ERA (5.88).
  • It’s early, but this Reds team reminds me of the 1999 team that took everyone by surprise and came within a game of making the postseason.  The ‘99 team had wins that came dramatically (I propose to you it was that team that invented “the hopping and mobbing at the plate with the game winning hit in the 9th” you see everywhere these days) and with a different clutch performer each night.  Edwin Encarnacion’s late heroics on Wednesday are a great example of how this year’s team has that mentality.  The Reds eeked out a win despite a decent starting effort by Dontrelle “Whatchyou talkin’ ’bout” Willis.
  • I wonder what the over / under would be on the number of 1-0 Reds games that happen this year (so far there’s been one - a win on 4/14 vs. the Cardinals and Chris Carpenter of all people.)  I’d put some major money on under 5.  Then again, I lost $300 bucks at the craps table last month, so what do I know?
