National League Championship Series Game 1
October 4, 1975 Reds 8, Pirates 3 Reds Lead Best of Five Series 1-0
Don Gullett got off to a rough start in game one of the NLCS as he gave up two runs to the Pirates in the top of the second inning. Down 2-0, the Reds didn’t waste much time to answer in the bottom half of the inning. George Foster led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball by Manny Sanguillen. Dave Concepcion drew a walk off of starter Jerry Reuss to put runners on first and second before Ken Griffey struck out. Cesar Geronimo flew out to left for the second out and it looked like the Pirates might get out of the inning unscathed, however, Don Gullett helped out his own cause by singling home Foster to cut the lead to 2-1. Pete Rose then grounded out to end the inning.
The Reds opened up the game in the bottom of the third. With the score still 2-1, Joe Morgan drew a walk and then stole both second and third base. Jerry Reuss continued to struggle with his control as he walked Johnny Bench to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Tony Perez then singled home Morgan to tie the game at 2-2. George Foster and Dave Concepcion both flew out to right field before Ken Griffey came up with a huge two out, two run double to put the Reds up by two runs.
The Reds really put the game out of reach in the fifth inning. Tony Perez drew a leadoff walk off of reliever Ken Brett. George Foster and Dave Concepcion racked up back to back singles to load the bases. Ken Griffey then grounded into a fielders choice (with the play being made at second base) and Tony Perez scored to increase the lead to 5-2. Cesar Geronimo flew out to center, but it was deep enough to get George Foster home to make it 6-3. Then, Don Gullett hit his first career homer to make it 8-3. It was his third RBI of the day and his first and only career homerun in 382 at bats.
The Pirate added a run in the ninth, but by that time the game was well out of reach. Gullett went the distance and gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five.
