Reds Hammer Cubs, Tie Dodgers for First Place

June 7, 1975 Reds 8, Cubs 1 (32-22)

The Reds jumped all over the Cubs as they put up eight runs on ten hits. Johnny Bench, Dan Driessen and Joe Morgan all hit homers. It was Driessen’s first homer of the season, and Johnny Bench went on to drive in four runs. The Reds were also very patient at the plate as they drew seven walks and only struck out four times.

Jack Billingham threw a five hit complete shutout, which was a lot better then he needed to be. The only run off of him came in the sixth when Bill Madlock hit into a fielders choice with runners on second and third.

The Dodgers lost their game, so the Reds moved into a tie for first place. They had a double header coming up to finish off the series with the Cubs, so no matter what happened, one of the two teams would stand atop the other.
