Reds Edge Mets, Win With Big Fifth Inning

May 9, 1975 Reds 4, Mets 3 (17-13)

It’s funny how through the course of a season, the good teams find a way to win. This game was one of those weird ones, as the Reds were basically shut down for eight innings of this game. But in one of those innings, the fifth, the Reds exploded for all four of their runs on only three hits. To make matters more unusual, starter Don Gullett drove in two of the four runs.

Joe Morgan was the other hitting star, racking up two hits and driving in two runs.

Gullett threw a nice game as well as getting it done with the bat. He went six innings, giving up eight hits and only one run. The Mets threatened in the ninth, but Clay Carroll came in to get the final out and earn his second save of the season.
