The Reds signed not one, not two, but three minor league free agents today. None of these are earth shattering moves, but two of them are pitchers, and we all know the Reds need arms.
Ricky Stone has already had his cup of coffee, splitting time between San Diego and Houston. His strikeout to walk ratio improved from about 1.5/1 to around 2/1 this year, so that’s nice. Thirty two homers in almost 220 innings is cause for concern though. We’ll see how he throws in spring training.
Right handed pitcher Brian Rose and outfielder Rob Stratton are Red’s farm hands. Both played for AAA Louisville last year. Neither was worthy of a mention in last years Baseball Prospectus, but Rose went 3-2 in six starts with an ERA of 3.31. Stratton played very well once he was called up, hitting .353 with twelve homers in only 119 at bats (.773 slugging!!!). He’s got some quality players to beat out in the outfield if he wants a spot on the big league team though.
